The Heat-Ready School Pickup Plan
Original preparedness explainer · Reviewed as a draft October 29, 2026 · General U.S. guidance
A pickup delay can become uncomfortable when a parent, child or caregiver waits outside in direct sun. A little scheduling protects everyone.
Choose a shaded meeting point, carry appropriate water, and give both adults a backup plan for a late bus or missed connection.
For children with additional support needs, coordinate with school staff so transitions do not rely on memory or a single person.
Heat deserves advance planning. Check local heat alerts, find a reliable cool indoor space, drink water as appropriate, and help neighbors who may have trouble staying cool. A fan alone may not keep an extremely hot room safe.
