Thunder Means Go Indoors
Original preparedness explainer · Reviewed as a draft October 29, 2026 · General U.S. guidance
A thunderstorm does not need to be directly overhead for lightning to be hazardous. Hearing thunder is already a signal to seek proper shelter.
Stop outdoor activities and move to a substantial building or enclosed hard-top vehicle with windows up. Avoid picnic shelters and isolated trees.
Remain sheltered for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder, following National Weather Service guidance.
The safest response to nearby thunder is prompt shelter in a substantial building or enclosed hard-topped vehicle. Avoid windows, plumbing and corded electrical devices during close lightning.
